Technology and Tiles on Home Pros

Gulf Tile VP/COO Lou Piniella, Jr. brought guest Juan Molina, General Manager of Del Conca USA, to discuss technology impacts on home design with Morning Blend co-host Carley Boyett, for a recent segment of Home Pros. In this discussion, technology did not refer to surround sound systems or tablet-controlled lighting. Instead, Lou and Juan discussed how changes in technology can impact tile manufacturing, design and home style trends.

The Technology-Tile Connection

Juan Molina explained that Del Conca began manufacturing of tile in Italy in the 1960s, coincidentally the same time that Gulf Tile started its own operations. At that time, tile was made by hand, which was a labor-intensive process that limited color, texture and style options. Today, technology allows for tile to be digitally printed. Using this process, Del Conca can take immense design ideas and change, edit, and transform them into a digital environment. These designs are then printed directly on the tiles to create beautiful, dramatic looks with the newest glazes available in the marketplace. Using technology, the company can create realistic, nature-inspired textures and patterns, developing designs that were impossible to achieve five years ago.

Tile Scale

Lou discussed the trend of large scale tiles in all areas of home design. He explained that the proliferation of media platforms, such as Pinterest, Instagram and Houzz, has given people access to the latest home styles, so ideas and trends explode. These large tiles are used throughout the home including:

  • Kitchens
  • Living rooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Countertops
  • Patios

These large tiles minimize or mitigate the need for grout, so all you see is the tile, not the mortar that holds it together. They enhance the size of the room and makes maintenance easier. These tiles are stain resistant and more durable than wood and natural stone, but can have the same look and feel of these materials without the maintenance hassles.

The European Look

Del Conca is an Italian company, and Juan explained that in Europe the average tile size is 4 feet by 4 feet, and in some cases its 3 feet by 7 feet. These sizes there are extremely large compared to here in the United States. For this reason, the US is generally its own market, with the exception of Florida. Our residents have a more European design plan, and home here are generally larger than in the rest of the country. As Juan explained, “You have these beautiful spaces to showcase these large tiles, and enhance and beautify your home.” The options for using these tiles are only limited by your imagination. You can install them vertically, horizontally, and even on your ceilings.

When Carley asked Lou what makes Gulf Tile stand out from the crowd, he answered, “We represent manufacturers like Del Conca, who are creating cutting edge products. We work hard to bring the best products from around the world, unique and wide offering to our customers. That’s what we do, what we love to do, and we do it well.” You can see Gulf Tile’s breadth of selection and passion in every one of our showrooms.
